How long does a roof replacement take?

The short answer — One to two days for most homes. Larger roofs, steep pitches, and multiple layers of old shingles can push it to three. The materials arrive the day before, so day one starts at sunrise — not with a delivery truck.

7am: tear-off — The crew strips the old roof down to the bare deck. This is the loud part: expect a few hours of steady hammering and the thump of shingles hitting the dumpster in your driveway — never your lawn.

Mid-morning: the decking check — With the deck exposed, the crew lead walks every sheet looking for soft or rotten wood. Anything questionable gets photographed and shown to you with a per-sheet price before it's replaced. This is the only point where the price can go up, and you approve it in writing.

Midday: the layers go on — Ice-and-water shield in the valleys, synthetic underlayment across the field, new flashing shaped on site, drip edge at the eaves. This is the part of the roof you'll never see and the reason it won't leak.

Afternoon: shingles and vents — Shingles go on six nails at a time, ridge vents cap the peak, and by late afternoon a one-day roof is closing up. A two-day roof pauses here, watertight, overnight.

The last hour: cleanup and walkthrough — Magnets sweep the yard, beds, and driveway for stray nails. Then the crew lead walks the finished roof with you — the same person who shook your hand at the start.
